A pre-Rapture delivery: the coming out of gay evangelical Christians

12 December 2006 Leave a comment Go to comments

As someone who does not eagerly pray for all the precursors to the supposed Second Coming it is quite remarkable to see how gay evangelical Christians, and disgraced Christians caught acting homosexually (there is a slight difference), are so much in the news these days. I do not find much in common with either group.

Examples of the two types of stories are here and here. (Registration may be required.)

I sent some comments to an “emerging” Christian blogger I read.

The bottom line for me, right now, is that so long as someone believes that the Bible is some celestially-dictated FAQ catch-all the tougher it is to reconcile the dogma of one’s faith with the life experience of one’s spiritual intuition.

Thanks for your interesting blog in these intersting times!

What do you think the communities of these recently outed “religious” people are doing to help their fallen brethren?
I read a disturbing story (soz, no link) about two elderly Catholic gents who have been recently deprived of taking the Sacrament. You know those guys will burn in Hell before Christ will accept them. Yikes!
Likely the communities surrounding these more family oriented men coming out are more accepting and loving, especially considering they loved them before they knew of any “bedroom” activities…
What do you think will happen this Christmas at all the socials, charity events, galas and carolling get-togethers when one’s Pastor/Preacher/Padre or spiritual leader has been caught being human?
    Will the party go on?

Yes, I agree. Interest post. Mind boggling. The Bible says that both the spiritual intuition of a person and the person’s brain should not go to waste but we used powerfully. It is possible for the two to intermingle and be interdependent on each other. I think this enriches one’s faith. Far too many people still think that being an evangelical means checking the brain at the door (and being a Neo-Con!) I know nothing of this. But, more difficult to reconcile is the Bible’s teachings against things that seem to us like “nature”. Some people’s bodies find themselves gay, some people’s bodies find themselves needing constant alcohol, sex, drugs, music, who knows. The Bible calls for abstinence against such distracting and destructive things. Now try to reconcile that with the Bible’s teachings in Romans and elsewhere about “freedom”. One has freedom to do many things (except sin) once he/she is no longer under the Law but has grace. The Bible says God accepts those who come to Him through faith and does not judge them. We hear an awful lot of dogma lately about Judgment. Perhaps we ought to study that one a bit more. Thanks for jogging my brain and way to be– you are quite brave to fight AIDs stigmas publicly!
