Thank you, Parliament!
With court decisions leading them by the nose Canada’s Parliament has finally adopted legislation to legalize same-sex marriage from coast to coast to coast. By a vote of 158 to 133, my country will become only the third nation in the world to extend equality to gay and lesbian couples who wish to marry.
In the final hours of debate several Liberals invoked the memory of Pierre Trudeau who, in 1982, ushered in our independent constitutional democracy with a Charter of Rights and Freedoms to accompany our made-in-Canada constitution.
It was also Trudeau who decriminalized homosexuality in 1969 saying that the state has no place in the bedrooms of the nation.
Even though gay marriage had already been legal in most provinces and territories, Conservative leader Stephen Harper vows to bring back the issue in the next Parliament if and when his party ever wins power.
Let him. The courts will run him out of town.
