A hat tip to Freeway Blogger for the name-play of his post’s title “Fag Haggard”.
Another sex scandal – and, yes, it’s a gay sex scandal – made the American TV news Thursday night. This time, though, it’s not a closeted politician being found out. It’s a guy-for-hire forcing the leave-taking of an evangelical leader and mega-church pastor.
Mike Jones, 49, says he has proof of his relationship with the Rev. Ted Haggard who, in addition to his duties as head of the 30-million strong National Association of Evangelicals, is pastor of the 14,000 member New Life Church in Colorado Springs. Jones says the two hooked up monthly over the past three years.
Haggard, married and the father of five (details which are supposed to cause disbelief that he could have sex with a man), has denied the allegations but has stepped aside for “spiritual counseling”, saying he could “not continue to minister under the cloud created by the accusations.”
His accuser refused to share voice mails that he said backed up his claim, as well as an envelope he said Haggard used to mail him cash. Jones told The Associated Press he went public with his allegations because he was pissed off when he discovered Haggard and the New Life Church had publicly opposed same-sex marriage.
“It made me angry that here’s someone preaching about gay marriage and going behind the scenes having gay sex,” said Jones.
New Life Church is just down the street from James Dobson’s Focus on the Family headquarters. Dobson and he are reportedly good friends.
